Biking along on of the dykes on our way to a nearby town. Paths like these connect towns and farmland and are just as well maintained as the roads and are sometimes wider than the space for cars. It's the reason why almost everyone has smart cart sized cars. In this case the stereotype is true; Dutch people bike almost everywhere. During the first two weeks we were here school was still in session and you passed by schools where the bike racks out front were completely full. And if you were out at the beginning or end of school you passed groups of kids biking. Here texting and biking is a big problem. In the right in the photo you can just see the canal that the bike path follows. The waterways are just as plentiful as the paths and next to a large canal like this one you can almost always find a dyke, which are large embankments used to contain flooding. Fields are often surrounded by them and roads or bike paths are built on top.
